I am both a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor. I teach overwhelmed men, women, and adolescents how to rewrite the stories in their heads that are holding them back. This often requires challenging the longest-held of assumptions we carry about ourselves about anxiety, mental health, addiction, and what we mean when we say we ‘just want to be happy.’
I started in the mental health field 31 years ago as a psychiatric medic in the Air Force and have held every job from an overnight tech at a State Hospital, to a mindfulness and meditation trainer, to the Clinical Director of a 54-bed residential treatment facility.
Along the way I earned master’s degrees in Comparative Literature and in Counseling Psychology, and spent some time traveling the world trading stocks and teaching English. After winning a nationwide screenwriting competition, I worked as a script doctor and independent film producer in Hollywood, where my specialty was helping people rewrite the stories that were most important to them.
When I realized I was counseling more than writing, I returned to psychotherapy and love every minute of it.
How I can Help
We are constantly rewriting the stories of our lives. I use cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness to help identify the core beliefs that may be holding you back.
As an LPC, I can help you look beyond anxiety and depression to realize the strengths you already have.
As an LCDC, I’m aware of how many ways we self-medicate to power through relationship problems, divorce, career issues, men’s issues, and trauma.
Sometimes this involves substance abuse disorders – but it’s amazing how much we self-medicate without substances.
My foundation of storytelling allows me to understand almost any issue you trust me with. Because of this commitment to understanding, I enjoy working with women adolescents, especially as they navigate anxiety around experiences they’ve survived with the distressed men in their lives.
It’s an honor to be able to serve you at Balanced Counseling of San Antonio, and I’m grateful to learn from each of you.
